| Start with a 10-12 mm clear rod. | |
| Make a gather about twice the diameter of the rod. | |
| Heat and marver the gather into a cone. | |
| Lay stripes of color on the cone, going from the tip to the widest part. | |
| Melt the stripes in. | |
| Cover the cone with a dark color. You don’t have to do this, but I think it gives a nicer finished product, and gives contrast to the light colored stripes. |
|
| Punty up to the tip of the cone. | |
| Heat the cone with a narrow flame directed at the widest part. Rotate. | |
| As you rotate, give just a little resistance on the punty. When the cone gets hot enough, it will twist. I like to give it at least one complete twist. | |
| Remove the punty, heat, and marver to shape again. | |
| Cover the cone with clear in a rough marble shape (more clear towards the tip than at the widest point). | |
| Make sure you don’t put clear over the very tip of the cone. This will ensure a nice deep vortex. | |
| Heat the clear and shape it into a marble shape. You can see how the tip of the innner cone goes all the way to the end of the clear, which is the back of the marble. | |
| Cover the clear with color. | |
| Melt and shape. | |
| Decorate the back if you wish. I'm not going to go into how I did the decoration here, but if you want to know, just ask. | |
| Punty up to the back of the marble. | |
| Heat the 10-12 mm clear rod where it joins the marble, and melt it off. | |
| Leave enough on the marble to form the lens. | |
| Heat and shape. You can now see the vortex design. Finish shaping and pop it into the kiln. |
